12-7-2013 8-57-38 AMFor many, growing older means steady loss of energy, vigor and strength. You start noticing that it is harder to carry groceries from the car and lift them to the counter. You may feel climbing stairs is harder and make sure you have a handrail to help pull yourself up one step at a time. Sometimes walking more than your normal distance is hard. What is the problem? This is generally regarded as muscle loss; and muscle loss is mostly due to INACTIVITY. 12-7-2013 8-57-46 AM Why not exercise more? Below are some of the most common reasons given by seniors as to why they do not stay active and some answers to help remedy the reasons.
  • Time. “I am just too busy to exercise.” Even if you have only 15 or 20 minutes a day, you can work out at your house. You can ask a certified personal trainer for a full body workout to complete in your home or you can follow one of many videos available.
  • Fatigue. “I am too tired.” The problem is you are not active enough. Exercise creates energy and vitality.
  • Age. “I am too old to exercise.” Studies show that people in their 90’s can double their strength with exercise without injury.
  • Health problems. “I have diabetes, heart disease, COPD, osteoarthritis …..” We know that people with health problems are the very people that will benefit the most from exercise. Talk to a certified personal trainer to get an exercise program tailored to your needs.
