9-5-2014 2-50-12 PMWhen I was in elementary school, we lived in Germany. Kids would ask me where I was from and I said I was born in Athens. The incomplete comment made people think I was born in Athens, Greece not Athens, Alabama. I was not embarrassed by Athens, Alabama but Athens, Greece sounded so exciting. Next spring, the Center for Lifelong Learning will take a group to Athens, Greece. The tour, called Greece: In the Footsteps of Paul, will take us on a journey around Greece and Turkey that was made by the Apostle Paul. The trip features tours of Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, Patmos, Santorini, Thessolaniki, and a three day cruise in the Mediterranean. Starting on day one, we will explore Athens with a tour of historic neighborhoods and the Acropolis. We will end with a dinner at the taverna (plaza). That is just the beginning of this 11-day tour. You can get a $250 savings if you register before October 8. The total cost of the trip, (TBA) will include the cruise taxes, port fees, round—trip airfare from Huntsville/Decatur airport, air taxes and fuel charges, and hotel transfers. There are 20 meals are included in this adventure so you will have lots of amenities to enjoy as well. Can’t go on the trip? Why not come hear Dr. Ronald Fritze talk about the history of this region? On Thursday, October 2, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm, at the Center for Lifelong Learning, he will be discussing the historical influences of Athens, Greece and the surrounding region. Dr. Robert White will be teaching a Bible Studies class – also called the Footsteps of Paul – starting in October. Call the Center for more information or check out our webpage. There are five classes that will meet once a month about Paul and his legacy, letters, and ministry. The trip of Greece is part of our Academic Traveler series. Each month we offer one or more trips with an academic flair. Sometimes it is hard to find the academic components but it is always an underlying theme. On October 9, the Academic Traveler trip is Moundville Native American Festival. This is a day trip to Tuscaloosa. Repeatedly named one of Alabama’s Top 20 Tourism Events, the Moundville Native American Festival has artists and craftspeople. Native Americans and other experts will be on hand to demonstrate arts, crafts and technologies during the entire festival. Watch for itinerary on the webpage—www.athens.edu/CLL. We will be leaving Athens at 9:00am and returning early the same evening. The fee is $65 per person which includes your transportation, entry fees, and a goodie bag. The Center for Lifelong Learning invites you to travel with us. Every trip is a great learning experience and I know you want to keep learning for life.
