Local teams have rounded the final turn of the fall season and have their sights on the finish line; some football teams have clinched a playoff spot while others are still jockeying for a position. Volleyball teams will start area tournament play October 22 and section cross-country meets will start November 1.

School-by-school highlights:

Ardmore

On the football field, the Tigers have fallen to 3-4 overall, stumbling against Madison Academy (42-10), Brewer (18-17) and East Limestone (34-0). The Lady Tigers volleyball team claimed wins over Lindsay Lane, Clements and Tanner. The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams came in third and fourth at the Elkmont Invitational.

Athens Bible

Volleyball victories have come against Priceville, Decatur Heritage, Elkmont, Meek and St. Bernard. The Lady Trojans’ cross country team came in sixth in Class 1A-4A at the Randolph Classic. The boys finished tenth in 1A-4A at the Scottsboro Invitational while the girls placed ninth. At the Elkmont Invitational, the Trojans were fourth and the girls came in third. The varsity boys and girls ended up in seventh and tenth places respectively at the Dew It OnThe Trails meet at Point Mallard.

Athens High

Athens High football is 6-1 overall, defeating Hazel Green (37-3), East Limestone (30-0), Cullman (19-16), and Columbia (56-0). The Lady Golden Eagles defeated Ardmore, Dora, East Lawrence, Columbia, Elkmont, Central-Florence, Brooks. The junior high boys’ cross-country team was tenth at the Scottsboro Invitational. At the Kudzu Hills Invitational, the varsity girls had a sixth-place finish, the junior high boys and girls came in eighth and fifth respectively.

Clements

The Colts football team’s record stands at 3-4, with losses to Westminster (60-14),West Limestone (20-6) and Lauderdale County (42-0) preceding a 40-0 win over East Lawrence. The Lady Colts posted a sixth place at the Elkmont Cross-Country Invitational.

East Limestone

East Limestone has improved their football record to 5-2 as they beat Scottsboro (28-13), Arab (42-0) and Ardmore (34-0), but fell to Athens (30-0). Lady Indians had volleyball wins against Tanner, Madison County, West Limestone, Elkmont and Athens. The team also went undefeated through the Limestone County tournament. East Limestone’s boys’ cross-country team was seventh at the Elkmont Invitational.

Elkmont

The Red Devils’ football record improved by two games since last mont; Deshler was forced to forfeit their game due to an ineligible player and another came on the field against Lexington (28-27). Two more losses came as well against Central-Florence (51-20) and Wilson (21-0). The volleyball team has beaten Tanner and West Limestone. The Lady Red Devils were eighth at the Scottsboro Cross Country Invitational. At their own Invitational, the Red Devils finished fifth with the girls coming in ninth.

James Clemens

Daevion Davis was picked to participate in the 32nd Alabama-Mississippi Classic. The game will be played December 17 at Montgomery's Cramton Bowl. The Jets football team upped their record to 5-2 overall, defeating Florence (47-33), Gadsden City (50-28) and Grissom (63-7). The varsity boys’ cross-country team won the Kudzu Hills Invitational with the girls coming in seventh; the junior high teams also topped their division. At the Jesse Owens Classic, the boys were runners-up in the silver division; the middle school Jets came in fifth.

Lindsay Lane

The Lady Lions have topped East Lawrence, Belgreen, Randolph, Whitesburg Christian, Woodville, Cherokee, Shoals Christian and Decatur Heritage on the volleyball court.

Tanner

Since last time, the Rattlers have moved to 1-6 on the gridiron after trouncing Tharptown 64-14 and falling to Hatton (38-14) and Addison (43-18).

West Limestone

On the football field, West Limestone is 3-4 overall, adding losses to Central-Florence (35-0), Wilson (21-7) and Rogers (39-21) along with a 20-6 victory over Clements. The Lady Wildcats have posted wins against Clements, Elkmont and Ardmore and made it as far as the Limestone County tournament finals where they lost to East Limestone. Boys’ cross-country finished eighth at the Dew It On The Trails meet.

Odds and ends

Clements graduate and current Wallace State freshman Matt Smith won the individual title at the NJCAA Division I National Preview Tournament in Viera with a 4-under par 212. He also placed third at the Wallace State Invitational last month.

The Night of Bands will be October 23 at 6:30 p.m. at East Limestone. The event features performances by the marching bands of Limestone County.
