4-3-2015 1-48-12 PMThe newly-formed Athens and Limestone County group, “Together We Stand,” is inviting the public to join in Project Blue Light by displaying blue lights to send a message in support of America’s peacekeepers that your light is guiding them to safety and peace. The color blue is symbolic of peace; let it shine all year long. Project Blue Light is a nationwide recognition of those Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. It began 1988 in Philadelphia when Dolly Craig wrote a letter to Concerns of Police Survivors stating that she would be honoring her late son-in-law, Philadelphia Police Officer Danny Gleason, during the holiday season by placing a blue light in her window. We would like to ask each of you to please consider placing a blue light in your window, or outside light fixture during the year to show your support for your police officers and those everywhere. As we display our blue lights let us also remember that Limestone County has had seven law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty: Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Henry Eubank, June 13, 1918; Athens Police Officer Bedford F. Bracken, March 24, 1941; Officer Billy Daily, Dec. 22, 1964; Lt. Benton McLemore, March 7, 1969; Officer Dewey Wayne Dorsey Sr., Feb. 11, 1989; Officer Anthony Lee Mims Jan. 2, 2004, and Sergeant Larry Wayne Russell, Jan. 2, 2004.
